webcam

A webcam is a simple technology consisting of three parts -- a digital camera, a computer and a connection between the two, usually handled by your computer's USB ports.

The "web" portion of the name "webcam" comes into play on the software side rather than the hardware side.

Instead of simply taking single photos and uploading them to some sort of storage medium, the webcam software makes your camera take still images consistently at a set interval.

It then transmits those images to another location using the Internet.

Essentially, webcams are normal digital cameras that take pictures very quickly and send them to other users.
